Gumby-Suited Would-Be Thief Fails at 7-Eleven Robbery in Rancho Peñasquitos

SDPD public Information officer/detective Gary Hassen reported that an individual in a Gumby costume attempted to rob the 7-Eleven at 9701 Carmel Mountain Road in Rancho Peñasquitos on September 7 at 12:30 a.m.

Store surveillance footage broadcast by KGTV/Channel 10 shows the Gumby impersonator entering the store with his hands raised above his head along with another man, who Hassen described as a white male, between the ages of 18 and 22 years old, standing between 5’6 and 5’8 tall.

According to Hassen, Gumby said to the clerk, “This is a robbery,” which the clerk thought was a joke and told Gumby he had to go back to cleaning. Gumby then reportedly tried to reach into his costume, presumably to produce a weapon from an inside pocket, dropping 26 cents on the floor in the process.

The other suspect, meanwhile, left the store and got inside a silver/white mini van and honked the horn, at which time the Gumby impersonator left the store. The clerk thought it was some sort of prank, so it was the store’s manager who reported it to police later that morning after viewing the surveillance video.

The 7-Eleven surveillance-camera footage has already resulted in a YouTube production with theme music.
