Local LGBT Republican Group Doesn’t Endorse DeMaio or Dumanis for Mayor

San Diegans will elect their next mayor based on a variety of factors. However, certain elections, particularly those in which a minority group achieves a milestone, are historic. Such is the case if San Diegans elect councilmember Carl DeMaio or district attorney Bonnie Dumanis — both are openly gay…and both are Republican.

Today, October 25, the local chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans — the only Republican political organization dedicated to representing the interests of gay and lesbian Americans and their allies — announced their endorsement of assemblymember Nathan Fletcher for mayor.

Log Cabin Republican president Victoria Kerley said, “As committed Republicans and LGBT advocates, we are proud to stand with Assemblyman Fletcher for a stronger, more prosperous San Diego in the years to come. Fletcher has worked tirelessly to protect California’s families and most vulnerable, to support small business growth, and hold the line against the most outrageous spending binges in Sacramento.

“Similarly, he has shown great courage and commitment to protecting the individual rights and personal freedoms of all San Diegans, including the LGBT community — speaking out even when it wasn’t popular to do so.”

Kerley added that both DeMaio and Dumanis “have compelling platforms and a track record of accomplishment that has long benefited San Diego in their respective elected roles,” but she alluded to Fletcher’s Marine Corps service and his public call for the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, as some of the reasons for LCR’s endorsement.

Fletcher’s leadership on issues that protect families and children, such as Seth’s Law, Chelsea’s Law, and an adoption reform that benefits the broader LGBT and San Diego community, were also among the reasons for endorsement.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans,” Fletcher said. “We are building a broad coalition of Republicans, Democrats, and independents who all believe I am the candidate best positioned to bring people together to solve the problems facing San Diego. This campaign is about turning the page on the past decade. I look forward to leading the city into a new era.”
