The Emerald City: Seattle, Washington

Seattle is called the Emerald City, and that designation is not a misnomer. Greenery, trees, parks and flower gardens abound in this sophisticated Pacific Northwest city that seems perpetually drenched in a misty rain.

Though touristy, the Space Needle is not to be missed. Its observation deck affords vistas of downtown Seattle and all the region's mountain ranges. Don't forget to visit the Needle gift shop and rotating Sky City restaurant.

A visit to Pike Place Market is always on tap, although recent construction and renovation can make a trip there problematic. The delectable Il Bistro restaurant – tucked away under Pike Place Market – has the freshest of local meats and produce.

One of Washington State's most popular tourist attractions is a tour of the Boeing Factory, 30 miles north of Seattle in Everett. Fascinating to watch 747s, 767s and 777s in various stages of manufacture and testing.

Rock fans can take a pilgrimage to Viretta Park and the nearby former home of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain at 171 Lake Washington Boulevard East. There, in the small city park, feel the spirit of this great musician who once lived (and died) in the wood-shingled home adjacent to the park. Benches full of graffiti commemorate the Grunge God and his memory.

A visit to this beautiful and friendly Pacific Northwest city is something to cherish. Every voyager should place Seattle on their travel itinerary.
