New Border Pedestrian Bridge to Open Soon

The new pedestrian bridge that crosses over the I-5 freeway in San Ysidro is scheduled to open this spring. From all appearances, it is ready to open now.

In the wee hours of the night, the lights along the length of the bridge have been on, and the cement work and railings look complete.

Once the bridge is opened, pedestrians will no longer be able to us over the old pedestrian bridge that runs alongside the U.S. checkpoint building, which will be razed to make way for a new customs house and re-entry facility. The old facility was built in the early ’70s.

The original federal customs house, built in the 1930s under the Roosevelt administration, still stands at the entrance to the current building and is used for the purpose of housing administrative staff.
