Man Attempts to Enter Sewer in Front of Rock Church

The Rock Church in Point Loma attracts big crowds every Sunday for their five services. At the 10 a.m. service on June 12, as congregants hurried in to catch the worship music, many saw a man on the ground in front of the church surrounded by Rock security guards.

Wearing a neon orange T-shirt with the words "Supreme Court east and west," the 30-something male had been attempting to open a street manhole and get into the sewer. He was carrying a notepad and a bundle of what looked like a blanket or sleeping bag. It seemed the three security guards were talking quietly to the man and attempting to keep him calm.

A group of church women, including myself, grabbed hands and began to pray for the agitated man. However, security guards had other ideas: two police cruisers pulled up in front — after the service had started — and the man was handcuffed and taken away, still insisting he "needed to get into the sewer."
