A Taste of California in Kenting, Taiwan

Secluded stretch of beach in Kenting

If there’s an equivalent to Ocean Beach in Taiwan, it’s Kenting. In Kenting, unpleasant weather is a rarity and swimmers can enjoy the water year round. The mood is relaxed, and almost…Californian.

If you’re traveling by high-speed train, head to the southernmost station, which is Zuoying, then transfer to a Kenting bus or take a taxi. This journey should take under four hours.

Kenting’s main strip transforms into a busy night market after dark, packed with cars, motorbikes and every type of vendor. Try the aboriginal rice wine, Xiao Mi Jiu, and the Chao You Yu, or fried squid.

Along the strip are a variety of Thai restaurants. In Taiwan, Kenting is king of Thai food. I recommend the shrimp pancakes as an appetizer – they’re delicious.

I prefer staying in Nanwan, which is less crowded and about two miles from the main strip. Buses arrive periodically, or you can even walk. Explore the beaches and find your own quiet, secluded location!

The key to having a nice time in Kenting is avoiding the large Chinese and Japanese tourist buses. Once the tourist buses arrive, your quiet haven will immediately transform into a cacophony of picture taking and loud conversation.

Kenting has all of the San Diegan’s favorite water sports, including surfing, swimming, jet skiing and snorkeling. The area’s scenery – both underwater and above – are absolutely wonderful. No wonder the Taiwanese look forward to vacationing in Kenting every year!
