Services Held for Slain SDPD Officer Jeremy Henwood

Memorial services for fallen San Diego Police Dept. Officer Jeremy Henwood took place at The Rock Church in Point Loma on Friday morning, August 12, 2011.

Thousands of people, plus an additional overflow crowd paid their respects to the former Marine, military reservist, and popular midcity beat cop who was shot in the head while on duty last weekend. A slew of dignitaries sat in the front rows of the church, including Governor Jerry Brown, State Attorney General Kamala Harris, Mayor Jerry Sanders, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, and the San Diego City Council.

Herb Smith, the SDPD Chaplain gave a moving introduction at the service, and compared police officers and Jeremy Henwood to David and Jonathon in the Old Testament — "mighty men and giant killers." Rock Pastor Miles McPherson alluded to the "seasons of life" as a tree that is vibrantly green in the glory of of summer, only to lose it's leaves in the cold of winter; yet there is always the hope of heaven and the promise of new life in the spring.

A series of solemn speakers followed, including Mayor Sanders, a grim-faced Police Chief Lansdowne, the officer's family members, fellow police and Marine friends. All spoke movingly, and some with obvious tears, about the popular officer, whose organs were donated to those in need upon his death.
