Work on Quince Street Bridge, in Maple Canyon, Continues

Repairs to the Quince Street Bridge have yet to be completed since a eucalyptus tree fell on the span March 20. According to a posting from councilman Kevin Faulconer’s office at Hillquest.com, San Diego's “Park and Rec is paying for the repairs out [of] its budget, and the city is using an emergency contract for one of its on-call contractors that have been pre-selected for this type of work.”

For about a week, contractors have been cutting nine eucalyptus trees and hauling them out of Maple Canyon on the north side of the bridge. The cutting is being done in order to prevent the trees from falling on the bridge in the future (eucalyptus trees are prone to falling because they have shallow roots). Heavy equipment and cranes in use have required the closing of one lane on Fourth Avenue.

Moreover, Hillquest.com also reported that on the afternoon of April 17, “Bankers Hill resident, David Cook, 25, accidently fell 45 feet while climbing on the bridge. He sustained several injuries including a fractured shoulder, broken ribs and wrist. He received treatment at Scripps Mercy Hospital.”
