Stone Temple Pilots Surprise Viejas

After nearly 20 years of live performances, it might not be fair to expect Stone Temple Pilots to bring anything new to the table. But, during the band's rescheduled date at Viejas Arena, often-aloof singer Scott Weiland did something he has rarely done on stage — he smiled.

The gesture was one of many surprises fans encountered during the band's 90-minute set. STP played several cuts from its latest album, including lead single "Between the Lines," but leaned heavily on old favorites. Predictably, the set included mid-'90s staples such as "Plush" and "Interstate Love Song," but fans were also taken off guard with rarities like "Still Remains."

Also unexpected: a paltry turnout, which may have been affected by both the show's Tuesday night slot and its having been delayed for nearly a month. The venue was selling $10 tickets at the door to try to fill the arena, which had been reduced to a half-house setup. Still, the concert's low attendance was not enough to discourage the band, which performed with characteristic zeal and swagger.
