Local Natives Visit Dog Beach in O.B.

Wielding acoustic guitars, Local Natives treated O.B.'s dog beach visitors to an impromptu jam session. Those fortunate enough to catch the intimate set found themselves in exclusive company, as finding tickets for the Natives' sold-out performance at the Belly Up Tavern that evening proved to be a daunting task.

Touring in support of last year's critical hit Gorilla Manor, Local Natives' mustached front man Taylor Rice thanked the Belly Up contingent for being "the rowdiest Sunday-night crowd ever" and for supporting their first show in San Diego as official headliners. Following upstarts the Union Line and a sensual set from the Love Language, Local Natives kicked the night off with "Camera Talk," focusing on the bands' forte for folky sing-a-longs (every band member had a mic) and rootsy, eclectic rhythms. As the last traces of light subsided over Solana Beach, tavern transformed to chapel, and the Natives' choir serenaded their SoCal gospel to a transfixed congregation. Highlights of the set included singles "Wide Eyes" and "Airplanes," a cover of the Talking Heads' "Warning Sign," and expansive closer "Sun Hands."
