Bees! The Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Office locked down Ben Bolt Middle School in early October after a yard worker disturbed a large nest of bees across the street from the school. Ben Bolt Fire Department helped close off the street, and Alice Pest Control helped to get rid of the bees. “The kids were kept inside so they wouldn’t be in any danger,” deputy Norma Jean Fernandez told Alice Echo News Journal. The lockdown remained in effect from 10:00 a.m. until the end of the school day at 3:38 p.m.

Poor Stumpy A November 3 ad in the Alice Echo News Journal offered a reward for a chocolate-colored Chihuahua named Stumpy. Stumpy is 15 years old, epileptic, blind, and missing half of her back leg. She has been missing since April 15. “She was my best friend, and I’m still looking for her,” says 55-year-old owner Lucy Arellano. “I just want my dog back.”

Boo! Twang! Country-music singer Kelly Kenning and his band played to a crowd of 1000-plus at the second annual Halloween Block Party. The festivities, hosted by the Duval County sheriff’s department and county judge Abel Aragon, took place behind the Duval County Courthouse in San Diego on Thursday, October 28. The hosts provided a moon jump, a laser room, and a party train and treated families to nachos, hotdogs, and candy at no cost to the families. The next stop on Kenning’s tour was at the Sherwood Courthouse in Mertzon, Texas, 360 miles north of San Diego, on October 29.

For Dogs Early in November, San Diego Animal Control received a $2000 donation from Drena J. Stallings of D’s Hot Shot Service. The money will go toward increasing the height of the facility’s kennels, which are currently four feet high. After renovations, the kennels will be six feet tall, making them easier to clean and giving larger animals more room. Currently, the facility houses 15 dogs, including 11 German shepherds that were removed from a home infested with ticks.
