Tsunami Watch 2010

After watching the news of the February 27 earthquake in Chile and the tsunami that was expected to hit Hawaii and the West Coast, I joined “Tsunami Watch 2010.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tsunami-warning website, a tidal surge of up to two feet was to hit La Jolla at 12:02 p.m.

With our cameras ready, we waited on the San Elijo Avenue bluff above Cardiff State Beach with about 50 other people. We waited for at least half an hour with no noticeable changes occurring in the ocean. We did notice that there were no surfers in the water, and lifeguards were driving around the beach making sure it stayed that way.

After our tsunami watch was over, several sheriff’s deputies cars that had been previously patrolling Coast Highway were having lunch at a Solana Beach restaurant.
