They’ve Come for the Machines

June 12 was the deadline for students to move out of UCSD’s on-campus dorms. The next day — with most of the student housing empty — there were at least two reported incidents of people trying to gain access to campus residences and possibly steal property that were left in the premises.

On June 13, at approximately 8:40 p.m., a UCSD resident advisor reported that a man was trying to gain entry into a Marshall College residence hall. The man did not appear to be a student and immediately raised suspicion. A police report stated that the man was trying to convince the RA to let him into the dorms. The suspect left before campus police arrived at the scene; he was described as a black male in his 30s, 5’10”, with a large build, wearing a backpack, beanie, and jacket.

Forty minutes later, more suspicious activity was reported by another resident advisor. The incident occurred at the Matthews apartments, close to the Marshall residence halls. According to the student, three men — described as dark-skinned males in their 20s — were looking into the buildings. They were believed to be casing the area for electronics that were left behind by students. UCSD campus police were unable to locate the suspects.
