From the Jazz Corner

KSDS deejay and jazz vocalist Cynthia Hammond celebrated the 20th anniversary of her weekly program "Local Jazz Corner" with a concert featuring three jazz combos.

Opening the show was a trio led by San Diego trumpeter Bruce Cameron. His group consisted of Mark Augustine on guitar, who was consistently tasteful and inventive, and Ted Williams, who played electric bass and drums simultaneously! It was amazing to watch him hammer bass lines with one hand while stroking the ride cymbal with the other. Locals Lori Bell on flute and singer Janice Edwards briefly augmented the trio. Edwards sang a down-and-dirty "Stormy Monday" that had the crowd erupting with commentary.

Next up was Ms. Edwards's duo with pianist Tommy Gannon. The lady knows her way around the blues, and Gannon played with a lush, lyrical style.

Hammond closed the show with her quartet featuring Mikan Zlatcovic on piano, Brett Sanders on drums, and Kevin Cooper on bass. She's got a sultry set of pipes that was effectively highlighted on soulful renditions of "All of Me" and "Teach Me Tonight."
