Padres Go "Boom" Late

“What the hell were they thinking?” was the remark of an East Village resident who awoke to blasts of fireworks at nearby Petco Park on Monday, May 31. The Padres were celebrating Memorial Day and a victory over the New York Mets.

It was a little bit too late for at least one angry condominium owner who started hearing the fireworks at approximately 10:35 p.m.

“People have work tomorrow,” he said. “I don’t get this team. I don’t understand their logic. They should have started the game earlier if they were going to cap it off with a fireworks show.”

(Because of the holiday, the Los Angeles Dodgers started their Memorial Day game an hour earlier than their usual Monday start time of 7:10 p.m.)

Minutes after the Petco Park fireworks ended, some of the 20,023 fans reported to be in attendance filled the streets.

When contacted, a representative of the SDPD could not say whether or not Petco Park had a restriction on what time fireworks could be set off. The representative did say that since it was a holiday on Monday, the Padres had the okay to do the fireworks.
