Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

Grace Potter's got legs, and in the deathless words of ZZ Top, "she knows how to use them." Fortunately, for the visually impaired, she's got pipes too, and she uses them superbly on Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.

In addition to lead vocals, Potter also plays acoustic and electric guitars, piano and Hammond B-3 organ, and wrote or cowrote all 13 songs on the CD. With her voice steeped in a blues aesthetic closer to Bonnie Raitt than Janis Joplin, she glides skillfully from '70s-style hard rockers such as "Paris (Ooh La La)," "Only Love," and "Money," to radio-ready popcraft such as "Oasis," "Medicine," and "Tiny Light." Even the country-infused "Goodbye Kiss" and "Things I Never Needed," showcase her hook-laden songwriting and the Nocturnals’ yeoman chops.

Named one of Rolling Stone's "Top Ten Bands of 2010," Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, in their third CD release, exhibit all the elements that make for a kick-ass rock band: facility in a number of musical genres, tight instrumental voicings and dynamics, and a vocalist capable of blowing the doors off any number of contemporary musical pop-tarts. All that, plus original songs, makes for a winning hand.
