The Touchies, the Odd Get Even, and Lil' Pizzas

Artist: The Touchies
Song: “Ur Friendz Suck
Heard by: Jimmy Wigdahl, San Diego
It’s your average punk song. It has three chords. It’s something that you listen to that’s fast and makes you want to run around in a mosh pit. Metal is more my preference, but I play guitar and I’ve had some punk influences. This seems a little more mainstream than a lot of older punk — more [influenced by] American punk than British punk. The lyrics were about partying — stuff that’s pretty punk. It’s short and sweet, how punk songs should be. I could see it being played on the radio, like, 94.9. I’d probably give that song a 7 out of 10.

Artist: The Odd Get Even
Song: “Kinetics”
Heard by: Jerry Guern, University Heights
I couldn’t really get into it. It’s not something that you just sit and enjoy listening to. It was almost like music for the credits of a TV show. It’s sort of like jazz or pop, but they overuse the electronics. They rely too heavily on them. It seemed like they were letting the electronics do their work for them. It was played well, but it didn’t seem like a very difficult piece to play because it was so repetitive. It seemed like they put a lot more work into figuring out what sound they wanted the keyboard to make than composing a complex piece of music. It’s all instrumental. I’d give it an average 5 out of 10. It didn’t really move me either way.

Artist: Lil’ Pizzas
Song: “Neverending Pizza Journey”
Heard by: Cory Davis, North Park
It was reminiscent of what is typical for sitcoms or the theme music of a television show. Acoustic music is good for that, it seems like nowadays. Very airy. It has a contemporary component, given the humorous sample about pizza at the end of the song. It’s a love song. It seemed like it would be the theme song for the band, given that they’re called the Lil’ Pizzas — unless they have pizza references in all their songs. It’s hard to say who I’d compare them to. It reminds me of the theme song to The Wonder Years. There’s some clear differences, but I kind of relate the two for some reason.
