“The ball is in our court, and we have to totally kick ass,” writes Kevin Martin, pianist and vocalist for San Diego indie-pop band Get Back Loretta. On January 28, the band will play a show to record executives from RCA and Hollywood Records at L.A.’s Viper Room.

The show came about after Get Back Loretta’s manager, “Jocko” Marcellino of ’60s greaser rock group Sha Na Na, was able to get some of the band’s songs into Dave Grohl’s hands. After listening to GBL’s tunes and liking what he heard, the Foo Fighters’ front man and drummer for Them Crooked Vultures suggested the band play a showcase for Hollywood Records bigwigs. Meanwhile, reps from RCA also agreed to attend.

As for the show, the band intends to keep it simple. Martin says nerves aren’t a factor when it comes to playing in front of major-label honchos. “We’ve got some new songs, but more importantly we have a newfound spark and energy. We feed off of this kind of stuff. We’ve been waiting to do this for years. Pressure inspires us to be our best and be the most professional. At some point you start taking yourself more seriously, and you have to stay composed if you want to do something great.”

The band has rented a party bus for the night and expects 40 local friends to join them for the ride up and to cheer them on at the show. “We’re trying to bring the energy from San Diego up into L.A.,” adds Martin in a January 12 email.

When asked about whether the band is ready to sign to a major label, Martin responds, “Absolutely. Our songs are definitely accessible enough to go the major-label route. That’s definitely the plan right now.”
