He’s the son of Alex Spanos and the president of the Chargers, currently seeking a multimillion-dollar handout from taxpayers as a condition for building a new stadium somewhere in the county. But La Jollan Dean Spanos also has a little-known artistic side. Though it’s not been locally publicized, Spanos is on the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where his colleagues include former secretary of state Condi Rice; gambling magnate Steve Wynn; Jean Kennedy Smith, sister of the late president; and Emilio Estefan Jr., member of the Miami Sound Machine and husband of singer Gloria Estefan. Spanos was appointed to the board in August 2006 by former president George W. Bush to fill out the remainder of a six-year term that ends in September of this year. Bush received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the Spanos family during his political career.
