When construction of the two-story police station in La Mesa is completed this spring, it will be outfitted with a new radio communications system and feature upgraded radio-related technology and electronics.

On Tuesday, February 9, the La Mesa City Council authorized a purchasing officer to negotiate the purchase and installation of an 800 MHz radio system for the new police facility (located on property formerly occupied by the old Helix Water building and the county library).

According to city staff, the current police radio system is ten years old and “…is nearing the end of its useful life.” The new system is expected to include some of the existing equipment. Day Wireless Systems, the local service provider for the city, described the installation of new equipment and relocation of the LMPD dispatch to the new facility as a “complicated effort.”

The general fund for police station furniture, fixtures, and equipment will be used to pay the $286,098 bill. The cost includes the purchase of three new consoles, software licenses, upgraded electronics, cabling, relocation, integration, and implementation services.
