An immigrant from Mexico who entered the country illegally was rescued from a mountain near Jamul on Wednesday, February 10, at about 4:00 a.m.

The 29-year old male used his cell phone to call 911 at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night after becoming disoriented during the latest winter storm in the East County mountains.

The San Diego Border Patrol’s Search and Rescue (BORSTAR) team responded to a 911 distress call from a mountainous region near Jamul. After assessing the situation, the border patrol requested a Customs and Border Protection helicopter unit to help with the rescue.

According to a press release from the U.S Customs and Border Protection agency, at around 3:00 a.m., the CBP helicopter pilot detected the faint light of the victim’s cell phone and directed the rescue team to the location. Agents found the man, who was suffering from hypothermia and unable to walk.
