Dave Rawlings Machine

Touring behind the critically acclaimed A Friend of a Friend, Dave Rawlings Machine made their second appearance in the past year at the Belly Up. A full house was treated to two covers-heavy sets, with selections ranging from Dylan's "Dear Landlord" and the Grateful Dead's "Candyman," to "Cortez the Killer" and "This Land Is Your Land," which was worked into "I Hear Them All." There were also generous portions of the new CD; "Ruby" and "Sweet Tooth" were highlights.

Rawlings proves to be a guitarist with few equals with his intricate picking on his 1935 Epiphone Olympic; his solo on Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately" was sublime.

Gillian Welch, a frequent Rawlings coconspirator, provided vocal harmony and rhythm guitar throughout the evening and contributed some of her own tunes, including crowd favorite "Look at Miss Ohio" and an unreleased tune from her upcoming CD. Local folk guitarist Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) joined the Machine for the encore covers of the Stones’ "Dead Flowers," "The Weight" by the Band, and "To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)," which Rawlings co-wrote with Ryan Adams.
