If you live in Rancho San Diego, you may be curious as to why a fairly large “L” shape of brush was cleared from the southeast corner of open space surrounding Cuyamaca College earlier this month.

On the evening of Monday October 19, it was evident that the digging of some large trenches had begun. As I walked through the Villa Montevino condominium complex, which is adjacent to the cleared open space, the purpose behind the activity became evident. Some flyers left for the benefit of the residents of the complex indicated that it's an Otay Water District project.

Workers had cleared the vegetation in preparation for the Jamacha Pipeline Project. It will involve over five miles of three-foot-wide water pipe, stretching from Lexington Avenue and Third Street in El Cajon to Campo Road and Jamacha. Phase III of the project will involve installing the pipe from Brabham Street and Jamacha along Via Rancho San Diego, behind the Villa Montevino condominiums and along Jamacha Road. It will run along the southern property line of Cuyamaca College before being connected to two ten-million-gallon reservoirs. The $22 million project is expected to be completed by August 2010.
