“The APTA Award winners are models of excellence in the public transportation industry who have significantly advanced public transportation,” said APTA president William Millar. “Winning this prestigious award means that you are one of the national leaders in the North American public transportation industry.”

According to an APTA press release, San Diego was one of three public transportation agencies that were honored as the best transit agencies in North America. (Olympia, Washington's Intercity Transit and Lynchburg, Virginia's Greater Lynchburg Transit Company were the other two honorees.) The MTS has demonstrated achievement in efficiency and effectiveness from 2006–2008. The San Diego Metropolitan System provides service to 94 million passengers annually or 290,000 each weekday.
