Beckie Sherman saw a woman being chased by a man on the San Diego River bike path at around 5 a.m. Friday, November 27.

“I was with friends at the Doubletree Hotel, across the freeway, and decided to do my morning walk on the bike path that runs east along the river,” Sherman told me. “Then I went south on the street — I think it’s called Mission Center Road — that crosses the river and followed the westward bike path on the south side of the river. I saw the woman being chased by a man where the path crosses underneath the freeway. The man and woman looked like they are in their 40s.”

Sherman relayed her story after asking me to call for help. I was out on an early-morning run, and though I had my cell phone with me, I had forgotten to charge it the night before.

I then walked over to the Camino de la Reina intersection with SR-163 and noticed the area blocked off by the police. The woman’s body was located along the side of southbound 163 near Interstate 8.

“The report started with a phone call by a passing motorist who called 911 at 5:25 a.m. Friday morning,” said California Highway Patrol officer Jesse Udovich in a follow-up call. “She seemed to have been a victim of a hit-and-run with the debris indicating that she was hit by a Honda Civic that left the area.”

The Hotel Circle off-ramp from southbound 163 and westbound Interstate 8 was closed until about 7:15 a.m.
