Cha-Cha-Cha, It's the Supersuckers

The Supersuckers took the stage just after 11 p.m. for a Sunday-night set at the Casbah. The band began with their signature barrage of near-deafening tunes “Bad Bad Bad” and “I Want the Drugs,” to which the packed house pumped their fists and sang along.

Replacing guitarist Rontrose Heathman was “Metal” Marty Chandler, or “the new guy,” as frontman Eddie Spaghetti described him, and Chandler didn't miss a blistering note. “Scotzilla” Churilla pounded the skins with precision, keeping the crowd moving to the beat of new tunes “I'm a Fucking Genius” and “Anything Else” from their latest release Get It Together.

Midway through the show, Dan “Thunder” Bolton traded in his sunburst Les Paul and grabbed “the four-strings of frustration,” aka the bass, as described by their frontman, to play a set of country rockers. After tweaking the bass strings, a pretty young lady made her way over to Dan and planted a kiss on his cheek. "If you keep your instrument in tune, girls will kiss you," proclaimed Dan.

Eddie, the consummate showman, made sure the audience knew when to hoot and holler, ending country tunes such as “Double-Wide” and “Creepy Jackalope Eye” by chanting “cha-cha-cha,” ensuring audience participation. After almost two hours, they closed with Suckers favorites “Born with a Tail” and “Fisticuffs” as well as Thin Lizzy's “Jailbreak.” Liquor was spilled, fists were raised, and demons were released into the San Diego night at yet another no-holds-barred Supersuckers show.
