Sonic Crowd Control

Danish rock duo the Raveonettes stopped at Solano Beach's Belly Up, bringing their harmonies, fuzz noise, and solid rock ’n’ roll to the show.

Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo shared the vocal duties, utilizing a good balance in harmonies between the male and female lead singers. The Raveonettes pulled off heavier, fuzz-rock guitar noise that could've washed out the sound but instead created a multilayered instrumental backing to the duo's vocals. The sound worked well in Belly-Up, with strong bass and sonic depth -- never overbearing, never flooded.

The light show added to the music. Their darker sounds build to ’50s era pop-themed choruses. The light show often featured white strobe lights during the choruses, leaving the players eclipsed by the light and in silhouette.

Unfortunately, a portion of the crowd took away from the show. Some rowdier, inattentive concertgoers got in an argument that warranted security jostling through the audience. While this mostly affected the opening acts, the crowd was still noisy through the Raveonettes’ set. Their large sound and heavy guitars did well to combat that. Overall, they put on a stellar set that may not have been jaw dropping but was a good exhibition of their sound.
