Electric Sexy

My previous experience of Detroit cult act Electric Six was in the U.K., in the cavernous surroundings of Hull University, where the sextet played to frenzied students.

It was a more subdued Dick Valentine and band that took the stage at Casbah to whoops of “Detroit!” from the crowd. “You're a caricature of yourselves!” taunted frontman Valentine, before delivering dance-punk favorites “Gay Bar” and “Danger! High Voltage.” The crowded floor moshed and sang along to the set, which included some catchy tunes from their new album, “Kill.”

In the middle of the set was a surprising, touching rendition of the INXS ballad “Never Tear Us Apart” -- a lighters-up moment that got everyone swaying.

Electric Six are a motley bunch, with Valentine flaunting a shabby charisma in his pinstripe suit alongside guitarist “the White Wolf,” who was broodingly handsome in slick white. They were received well by their fans, and after a triumphant encore, made a final farewell promise to return.
