Foothills Falls Flat

The Foothills Adult Education Center on Melody Lane in El Cajon 
will not be offering summer classes this year. Fall classes may not be available either.

An education facility under the control of the Grossmont Union High School 
District, Foothills began to announce the closure of programs in response
 to budget cuts made in the recent state education budget.

On Tuesday, 
March 3, staff and educators at the facility began informing students that 
no classes would be offered beyond the conclusion of current courses.

In addition to craft- and leisure-oriented activities, the Foothills 
facility had offered a high school diploma/G.E.D. program and Adult Basic
 Education to the community. These programs won’t be offered beyond July 
2009, and it is unknown if they’ll return.

The cancellation of courses is one technique being employed in order to meet 
a statewide lack of educational funds. In the nearby Sweetwater 
Union High School District, teachers are being given early termination notices.

Last month it was announced that the San Diego Unified School District was offering older teachers incentives to 
retire early in order to allow the district to hire lower-cost educators.
