Target: Doctor

An estimated 2000 marchers protested the Tijuana kidnapping and subsequent police impotency in gaining the release of Dr. Irán Cota Cota, medical doctor and secretary general of the Mexican government’s social security agency, the IMSS (Sindicato del Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social).

A group of heavily armed men reportedly kidnapped the doctor from his home — in front of his family — on Wednesday, December 2, at around 9 p.m.

It is presumed that there will be a demand for a large sum of money as a condition of his release by the kidnappers; however, police and civil authorities are hush-hush on the particulars of the situacion delicado.

Some 12,000 workers are affiliated with the IMSS in Baja. The marchers in Tijuana shouted out “Queremos a Cota sano y salve” (“We want Cota, safe and sound”) as they marched from Clinic 27 to el centro de gobierno in the Zona Rio. Other marchers carried banners protesting the plague of kidnappings that has targeted TJ’s most educated and prominent.

Protest marches were also carried out in Ensenada and Mexicali.
