OstrichLand USA

The next time you want to invite two dozen friends over for breakfast, you can feed them all with one scrambled egg – if you’re cooking an ostrich egg, that is. Weighing 3-4 pounds, an ostrich egg is the equivalent of 24 chicken eggs.

You can meet and feed the world’s largest birds at OstrichLand USA, 610 E. Highway 246 in Solvang, California. They’re open daily from 10 a.m. until dark, and admission is just $4 for those over 13 and $1 for kids 12 and under.

Don’t let their size fool you – these nine-foot, 250-pound birds can reach speeds of 45 mph. Each produces 1.5 pounds of feathers per season. They live 75 years and lay eggs until they are 40.

OstrichLand’s unique gift shop features hand-painted eggs, feather creations and ostrich meat, which tastes similar to beef, but is leaner and lower in fat. (Meat sold is not from their birds.)

Rooms are available at Quality Inn Buellton.
