She was in town to promote How to Save Your Own Life, the follow-up to Fear of Flying, "a book that shocked some with its frank look at sex," according to the writer who interviewed Jong. The writer noted that the author "is obviously used to explaining away the close parallels between the lives of Erica and [the protagonist in her books]."

"The plot of the books only provides a thread," responded Jong.
