On the first Wednesday of each month, the San Diego Astronomy Association sponsors free evening star parties near the fountain at Balboa Park. These sessions immediately follow "The Sky Tonight" monthly planetarium program at the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater. In North County, the Oceanside Photo and Telescope store hosts annual star parties in June and November featuring demonstrations of the latest telescope technology. Urban stargazing in coastal San Diego is dogged by frequent invasions of nocturnal overcast; nonetheless, clear skies are fairly common October through March.
