The old baton twirler isn't around anymore (he died in 1992), but his legacy lives on in this enclave just north of Escondido proper. Of course the trip must include a tour of his museum, complete with a life-size statue of the polka-pusher and the world's largest champagne glass. And Gram will be delighted when she stands before the reconstructed bandstand, imagining that the musicians are playing a waltz just for her and a long-ago beau. Afterwards, if she's up for more fun, check out the activities including "build your own sundae," "make your own bath salts," and a workshop that uses myrrh, aloe vera, and bee products to "help release emotions that cause pain." Top the day off with a dinner buffet and musical theater. If you're all tuckered out at the end of the evening, Mr. Welk's hotel will be happy to accommodate you. Take I-15 north to the Deer Springs-Mountain Meadow Road exit. Turn right, then turn left onto Champagne Boulevard. Go approximately 2 1/2 miles.
