Although the adult members of the Fern Street Circus say they run a recreation program, not a circus school, don't tell the kids attending the free After-School Circus Skills Program at Golden Hill Recreation Center. Instruction is available in acrobatics, balancing, clowning, contortion, juggling, trampoline, trapeze, and tightwire. The program for children (age 6 to young adult) is supportive, not competitive. Safety is preached and there haven't been any serious injuries since the program began in 1993. With the adults' encouragement, at the end of the school year the kids use their new skills to produce the Fern Street Junior Circus. A summer camp, music instruction, and in-school residency programs are also offered.
