Pioneered by the National Park Service, this overnight program takes kids back in time on an imaginary voyage. According to the website, "They are challenged with real shipboard activities that demand critical thinking and clear communication skills." As soon as they board, they meet a captain, first mate, second mate, and cook, dressed in costume and speaking19th-century vernacular, who will run roughshod over them. The students have become sailors in the year 1874, and they've got work to do. Tasks include setting a sail, hoisting a large barrel, hauling each other aloft to clean the mast, manning the bilge pump, cleaning the decks, preparing meals, and pulling night watch -- all challenges that require teamwork and communication.
