Dr. Gilroy uses buccal (cheek) swabs from mother, child, and the alleged father to determine DNA. Results take 7 to 10 days. Fees to test mother, child, and potential father are $450, with a required $200 deposit; labs will charge anywhere from $15 to $40 for specimen collection. Tests are confidential and legally conclusive. "As far as I know, we're the only such lab headquartered in San Diego and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks." If determination isn't court ordered, it's prudent to test before paternity becomes an issue. "A lot of men get satisfaction out of knowing for sure; if it's been gnawing on their psyches. After a test they no longer have to worry," says Gilroy.
