Best of 2003: Best Neighborhood For Snooping

Marlborough Drive, Kensington

Kensington's large Spanish-style homes almost always have vast bay windows facing the street. Curtains or folding screens may obstruct some, but many afford an open view of at least three rooms. Marlborough Drive, north of Adams Avenue, and the streets to its immediate east and west are uniquely rewarding. Under the pretense of "looking for decorating ideas," you can spy domestic disputes, sullen family meals, TV zombies, and knickknacks of questionable taste. Weekday nights after sunset are best for Kensington "window shopping." On weekends, cruise the alleys to snoop on backyard barbecues.
