Every Monday at 6:30 p.m. and every other Sunday at 2 p.m., the downtown public library offers free film screenings in its third-floor auditorium. Curator Ralph DeLauro began the weekly film series in 1984 (modeling it after La Jolla's now-closed Unicorn Theatre), with a preference for "low-budget, high-talent" independent and foreign films. Recent selections have included Nine Queens, Italian for Beginners, and Monsoon Wedding. Documentaries from the Public Broadcasting Service's POV series, as well as student films, are frequently premiered at the library, and often feature brief introductions by the filmmakers. The monthly schedule posted on the website doesn't reflect last-minute additions, so call the library's information desk for current information.
