Paintball battles -- stalking and shooting opponents with paint-loaded waterguns -- used to be common but are no longer staged indoors anywhere in San Diego. Velocity Paintball maintains its field in Ramona where outdoor walk-on warplay takes place Saturday and Sunday. For $35 per person, players get the necessary gear -- a mask, gun, tank, and hopper. Paint ammo is sold separately and two players can get by if they split a case. Players must sign a waiver acknowledging game rules and Velocity's nonliability in case of injury or equipment damage. The battle rages all day from around 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Though water soluble and nontoxic, the colorful ammo will cause stains, so players should wear old clothes and shoes (cleats are recommended).
