City Deli's new liquor license was fought by nearby bars who feared the competition of another bar/restaurant in Hillcrest. The Deli prevailed and its front counter area has been remodeled into the Village Bar. Opening in October 1999 and no longer limited to beer and wine, the bar offers happy-hour specials including draft beer for $2 and $2.50 well drinks. The munchies come cheap with a half-price happy-hour menu from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Full dinners are available from $9.95 and specialty dishes such as knishes ($3.95) and calamari steak ($5.95) can be delivered right to your bar stool.
