This French film carries heavy emotional cargo with it -- or rather it sends its cargo on ahead of it. The star-director, Cyril Collard, died of AIDS after completing it, a semi-autobiographical portrait of a promiscuous bisexual filmmaker who is HIV-positive. The scenes of Unprotected Sex (expression of faith in the relationship: "I felt nothing can happen because we love each other") sparked some extracurricular debate, and were found wanting in the department of Public Service. The film proper, however, is a big bore -- disorganized, rambling, superficial, and incredible. (A high-speed car collision is just a momentary inconvenience.) Actor Collard has a certain impish twinkle about him, and director Collard never tires of looking at him. The plot, too, revolves around his irresistibility. In more than one way, the spectator may wonder what all the fuss is about. With Romane Bohringer. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
