Grantham Coleman's Hamlet may be unique. Themadness is more physical than mental. The more Hamletbecomes agitated, the faster he moves. We don't see many of his"aha!" moments spring from within, but overall it's a consistent performance that works on its own terms. To a person, the Barry Edelstein-directed cast articulates well, and the story is always clear. Many actors, however, rely on hard vocal attacks. Every line's a headline, with little modulation or nuance. Those who do the latter, Patrick Kerr's Polonius for one, stand out. Other choices attract attentionbut shouldn't: an 11-foot, golden suit of armor practically shouts "I'm the symbol"; sophomoric insertions -- quotingHenry V,a non sequitur complaint about classic plays in modern dress, and especially Hamlet singing "Rule Brittainia" -- detract from an otherwise competent production of Shakespeare's seemingly infinite tragedy.Worth a try.
