Evita
Well now, looky here: an embittered, occasionally outraged, but still strangely sympathetic musical about a populist politician who is maybe more interested in herself than in the people who adore her, who is fond of grand gestures but tends to behave in small, selfish ways, who would rather be regarded as a saint than do the work of good governing. As the narrator sings at both outset and closing: "Things have come to a pretty pass when someone pretty low class can be respected and admired." So yes, points for timing! Also for staging: Evita is a big show, and Cygnet puts it on without either a big cast or a big set, relying instead on creative choreography and excellent music. At times, the speed and spread of the lyrics and notes get the better of the cast, especially when they're in motion. But they hold still and get it right for the big moments: "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You," and the closing Lament, in particular.
