Getting to Know the Poetry of Joy Harjo
2730 Historic Decatur Road, Barracks 16 #202, San Diego, 92106
Age Limit: 18+
Cost: $30 - $36
Please join Karen Kenyon in this 2-hour class as we explore the poetry of our new Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. Joy is the first Native American to hold the position, and the 18th woman. We will read through several of her poems, and discuss her themes, and the influence of nature and of her culture. Joy Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, and is author of 9 books of poetry and a Memoir, “Crazy Brave.” She has just finished editing The Norton Anthology of Native Poetry. We will explore our own connection to our ancestors, nature, and explore the idea of our connection to the earth and to our sacred places, as we do a writing exercise. If you have a favorite Joy Harjo poem, please bring it to the group.
