Art Shop Talk: Julia San Román
Join Vanguard Culture for featured artist Julia San Román, who joins curator and arts advocate Susanna Peredo Swap for a discussion about her new series “The Hours,” which pays homage to immigrant workers who she believes are the silent base of the American economy. The first 25 people to register will receive a limited edition face mask.
“The Hours is my homage to all our valuable foreign workers, who I believe are the silent base of the American economy. They are the seeds, the fasteners, the wheels, the gears of our society; and by taking care of the basics, they nurture it. Some of these courageous and reliable workers accumulate sick hours for a lifetime but, frequently, either they are insecure about taking “sick leave,” or they are not allowed to take it by their supervisors, thus they continue working even when they are ill. This is my Now, as I work part time as a medical interpreter in the Workers’ Compensation System. It is a reality I was aware of, but now I come face to face with this unfair situation on a daily basis.” – Julia San Román
