The next meeting of the San Diego Laurel and Hardy Club, Saps at Sea Tent, will be the group’s annual Saps Spook-Tacular! The cartoon of the month has yet to be announced, ditto whatever’s being billed as the “Hallo-scream goodie.” What we do know: you’ll find out precisely “Who threw that pie?” when the show opens with Moe, Larry, and Shemp, starring in Spook Louder! Short #2, Call of the Cuckoo, is a bonafide curiosity: tired of living next to an insane asylum, Papa and Mama Gimplewart (Max Davidson and Lillian Elliott) and their son Love’s Greatest Mistake (Spec O’Donnell) trade their home for a jerry-built nightmare. Davidson receives star billing, with Stan & Ollie appearing briefly as a pair of shaved-head mental patients. Next up, there’s Dirty Work afoot when the boys play chimney sweeps who encounter a mad scientist who has discovered the Fountain of Youth. Bringing up the rear is the hilarious The Chimp, wherein Laurel & Hardy end up the owners of both the titular ape and a flea circus. All this and a costume contest to boot!
