Laurel & Hardy Hallo-scream Spooktacular
Expect more howls than chills when Saps at Sea Tent aka The San Diego Laurel and Hardy Group presents the Laurel & Hardy Hallo-scream Spooktacular. This is possibly the last game in town that tries to recapture the old school moviegoing experience, right down to the and pre-show cartoons and coming attractions. Appropriately enough, this Halloween extravaganze commences with Spooks!, a 1930 Walter Lantz cartoon starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Lantz not only stole the character from Uncle Walt, he also bowwoed heavily from Disney's Skeleton Dance. The first of the evenings cavalcade of creeps is Mae Busch in Oliver the Eighth (1934). Jilted by a husband named Oliver — and nuttier than a fruitcake — Merry Widow murderess Mae sets out to marry and mangle as many men with the surname as possible and that includes our pal O. Hardy. Buster Keaton makes a cameo appearance in The Spook Speaks, a 1940 short from Columbia directed by 3 Stooges veteran, Jules White. There's nothing quite so frightening as watching the single greatest comedic director reduced to working for the ham-fisted likes of White. The real "Treat" this night is the presentation of a L&H short that was long thought lost. thought lost short film "?". This will be the first time shown in San Diego since the original release of this 1927 masterpiece. I was asked by bossman John Field to keep the title under wraps. You won't be disappointed. In addition, John promises, "another terrific SAPS Raffle, an original game show called “Name that Monster!,” a costume contest (with Prizes), and more surprises." — Scott Marks
