Narrative Non-fiction
Nonfiction is often thought of in terms of technical guides and news reports, but some of the greatest stories are the true stories happening all around us. Great narrative nonfiction is well-researched, fact-based storytelling that incorporates the tools of fiction, like creating a narrative persona, setting scenes, presenting interesting characters, and creating the look and feel of a setting for the purposes of journalism or book-length writing. In this workshop we will discuss techniques for researching and reporting a nonfiction work, writing techniques, and ethical responsibilities. Approximately half of the class time will be spent discussing your nonfiction book or article, at whatever stage it is in, from conception to draft. Please bring either a sample of your draft or an outline of a potential story so we can discuss your piece during the class. Bring a pen and notebook or laptop as well. With Felicia Campbell.
