Station Eleven: Reimagining Our Future
As part of Oceanside Public Library's events for the Big Read, Mira Costa College will host a moderated discussion featuring professors Jane Mushinsky (Letters), Bruce Hoskins (Sociology), and Jonathan Cole (Physics). These scholars will examine the themes of Station Eleven in the context of their disciplines, and discuss the preservation and future of our culture and environments. Their unique perspectives will highlight the contemporary relevance of the post-apocalyptic novel.
During the months of March and April the Oceanside Public Library will host a series of free public programs surrounding themes from the Emily St. John Mandel novel, Station Eleven. These events include a display at the Oceanside Museum of Art, Theater Workshops with the Old Globe, a Scholar Panel and a visit from the author. The library will have free copies of the novel at selected events, and all residents of Oceanside are encouraged to read and discuss the novel. The novel is set in the Great Lakes region, a fictional swine flu pandemic, known as the "Georgia Flu," has devastated the world, killing most of the population.
